Distinguished and Famous people from Greater Shepparton

🎵 Briggs

Yorta Yorta musician and writer Adam Briggs grew up in Shepparton, a place that remains prominent in his public identity and work. Known professionally as Briggs, he has built a career across hip-hop, television writing, acting and presenting. He also founded Bad Apples Music, creating opportunities for emerging First Nations artists rather than limiting his influence to his own recordings. The title of his album Sheplife makes the hometown connection fairly hard to miss. His NAIDOC artist recognition acknowledged a creative career with several outlets, from sharp lyrics and comedy to the practical business of helping other musicians reach an audience.

📚 Aunty Lois Peeler

Aunty Lois Peeler's family moved to the Goulburn River Flats around Mooroopna and Shepparton after participating in the 1939 Cummeragunja Walk-off. Her career ranged from modelling and singing to education and public service. Her South-East Asian performances during the Vietnam War became part of the story later dramatised in The Sapphires. She worked with her sister Hyllus Maris to establish Worawa Aboriginal College and later became its principal. She also recorded the local community's history through an oral history of the Flats and a documentary. These projects preserve experiences she knew through family and community, giving her regional connection substance beyond the fame of a film adaptation.

🎖️ Sir Murray Bourchier

Sir Murray Bourchier combined farming, military service and Victorian politics. His family held land in the Tocumwal and Strathmerton districts, and his First World War service with the Light Horse is recalled by Shepparton's horse-and-rider memorial. After the war he entered the Victorian Parliament, serving in agriculture and markets portfolios before becoming deputy premier in 1935. He was appointed Victoria's agent-general in London in 1936 and died there the following year. He and his wife are buried in Shepparton cemetery. The horse-and-rider memorial brings his Light Horse service into the city's public landscape.
